Abstract An inadequate understanding of the energy needs forcibly displaced populations is one main obstacles in providing sustainable and reliable to refugees their host communities. Here, we provide a first-order assessment factors determining decision deploy fully renewable mini-grids almost 300 refugee settlements sub-Saharan Africa. Using an survey publicly available traditional earth observation data, estimate total electricity demand 154 GWh yr –1 . This figure includes lighting, air circulation phone charging for 1.15 million households estimated 59,000 microbusinesses around 7,000 institutional loads. set techno-economic modelling tools, thus compute corresponding upper-bound up-front cost access just over US$1 billion. Deploying solar photovoltaic instead diesel implies avoiding greenhouse gas emissions 2.86 MtCO 2e 20 years.
